A few days later, wearing our best 501, we were on board the American Airlines flight to San Francisco. We had to show our ID to have small bottles of Champagne to celebrate our freedom, and we didn't mind.
We were helped with loading our luggage into the coach sent by Saint Mary, and told that we have two hours till another plane delivers a few more foreign students. We decided to have a real American breakfast, it was easier said than done. There was Mexican, Italian, French, and Vietnamese places, and we didn't want to go to a McDo which would for sure be the same as in France. We eventually went to Bacon & Bacon, and we had fried eggs and bacon.
It was a two hours drive to Monterey, and Saint Mary. We were a dozen foreign students, all girls, as it is a girls only college. We barely spoke, we were all saucer like eyes for discovering the San Francisco Bay. We had of course seen plenty of movies, but this was the real deal.
Our coach dropped us in front of large building with tall columns facing a huge lawn with a fountain, and a cathedral size church. We saw girls zooming around with bicycles, skateboards, and scooters.
We were given a short welcome speech which included a few rules, like no smoking, no drinking, no drugs, and no cars or motorbikes. We were also given a map, and understood that the campus is like a village, a large one.
Cricri and I were allocated a quad, a room to be shared with two more girls, in the Augusta House. We misunderstood the map, and got lost. We asked a girl on rollers wearing short jeans shorts, and knee guards. She pointed to a four stories high building.
We discovered a large hall opening onto a cafeteria, and on the first floor we found our room and roommates. They had arrived earlier, and introduced themselves. "My name is Jolene or Jojo and this here is my sister Tanka Rae."
We introduced ourselves, and they complimented us for our English. We blushed for the compliments, and mentioned that we have been on a couple of exchange programs. Cricri added, "Summer camps, upstate New York."
Tanka told. "We're from Camp Pendleton, our father in an officer in the Marines."
We echoed that with. "We are also military brats, our fathers are officers with the Second DB."
They chimed in unison. "Division Leclerc!"
We were mouths opened. They laughed, and told that they have been in France for a few months. "Our father was invited by the Légion Etrangère."
"Ah!'"
"And we are taking French as our second language."
We offered to help them, and found out that they have also competed for their scholarships.
Jolene and Tanka Rae changed out of their traveling clothes into cutout jeans shorts, and encouraged us to do likewise. We followed their lead, and rolled up our shorts as high as them.
After cheese and bacon burger at our Cafeteria we told them that we have to buy bikes. They offered to tag along. We had to ask a couple of second years where to find a bike shop. We eventually found it at the edge of the campus.
A super dishy attendant helped us. He wasn't the only one to have spotted our accent, and another one soon joined him. I felt their eyes feasting on my legs, and Cricri must have also felt them. With wide smiles we promised to come back if having any problems with our bikes.
As we left the shop, Jojo and Tanka teased us. "You both blushed as a pair of fifteen years old!"
While we explored the campus, they announced. "We are going to take the tryouts for the volleyball team, you want to try with us?"
"Sure!"
