Rosaleen and the cane
ReplyDeleteThat gorgeous photo of Rosaleen on the O&P link, standing hands on head, tartan skirt & grey socks; reminds me that as a child, Miss Young (AKA Sarah Winchester) gotten raised in a strict Presbyterian family and would feel the SMACK! of the whippy, rattan cane across the bare skin of her botty when she misbehaved. Oh my! This is no surprise, but I was mesmerised to discover this fact, reading Rosaleen's interviews in Janus.
The cane across a bare botty was quite common for girls in traditional, strict homes in the UK in the 1980s, when naughty steps were less frequently used in yore!!! Quite right too!!
I always felt a strong affinity with Rosaleen because I gotten the cane on my bare buttocks countless times from my God-fearing mother, growing up in Georgia USA in the 1960s. I watched my younger sister receive the same Spartan medicine on the tender-skinned place "provided by God" for "tough love!"
At age 63, when I see impossible lil' princess brats behaving intolerably in the store, destined for the naughty step when they gotten home!. I sure think of hands on heads in the living room. I sure think of how pretty dresses gotten raised by strict moms. And how cotton panties gotten slipped down appropriately ...just to our knees to fully expose the target area. I think of scolding. I think of Rosaleen's bare soft botty in the photo above (the tender seat of learning), and how mother's terrible, thin, rattan cane stung so ferociously (but safely, lovingly and harmlessly) on the sensitive, bare skin of my pudgy, white backside. That was the punishment that was needed!! I sure gotten it a whole bunch!! And I sure learned right from wrong!!!
