Nostalgia stings! The Southern strap was a rite of passage.
ReplyDeleteAll too real, B! A bare bottom blistering in the living room, over the sofa (not the woodshed, already!) was par for the course for Southern belles in Georgia in the 60s & 70s. The church advocated it at every turn. Everyone advocated it at every turn!!!
Our kind, God-fearing mother eschewed the strap, so my sister & lil' Ol' me gotten the rattan cane on our bare botties instead! Never the strap. Groundings & timeouts had not yet gotten invented ha-ha! Why am I laughing, B ? :-)
At our wonderful & frequent church coffee n cookies mornings in our homes (sooooo very suburban 60s!), spankings always emerged as a topic in in conversations...and our mother gotten to convince some younger moms (new to the church) to purchase a flexible, thin cane for their daughters' bare backsides instead of the more popular strap.
This was naturally, rather cringingly-cute for sister & I to witness at coffee mornings. But otherwise, the conventional strap/belt was the predominant bottom-smacker (rod of correction) in residence for y'all!
Hugs n poor, sore, blistered botties, in the living room, to you, B. Thanks with hugs :-)

Such a belting with knickers stretched between her legs will for sure have caught her attention, but the cane is way more severe...
DeleteHugs for your poor botties :-)

Why yes, the cane was harsh on my tender, bare botty, B. For sure. But it was also totally harmless. And I believe it was necessary punishment. To teach sister and me right from wrong. In fairness to my mother, knowing that my panties would always have to come down for the cane on my bare, chubby, white buttocks, sure focused my mind growing up, and made me think twice about telling lies, fighting with my sister, showing bad attitude or throwing tantrums in the store or mall!!!
ReplyDeleteHugs n thanks, deculottee and rueful memories, B.
