Drawing one - cane to bare botty by Paula Meadows.

Oh my! The first picture (thank you for the rouge, B. Ouchieeees! Boo-Hoo!) is one of my all-time faves in all our art, B. Very much so. It is so authentic & Spartan: don't spare the rod, already!! This is one of Paula's very first drawings (Janus, early 1980s) when she vividly captured the reality of our CP at home in yore.
In the 1960s, sister & me when naughty, sadly gotten our bare, white botties to have an uncomfortable meeting with mother's rattan cane in the living room. This chastisement was just a routine, necessary, harmless fact of life growing up. And for sure, darn, good whoopings were recommended by the church for y'all at every turn. Oh my! It was a good thirty years' before the naughty step, B ha-ha!
The scriptures on the wall are awesome & iconic here, & I so love the girl's hands on head, B. Very poignant. That was mom's process: so we gotten to put our hands on heads for the scolding, panties-pulled-down-to-knees, unblemished, lily white, marshmallow bottom reveal for the cane. And also then hands on head after, for the panties-pulled-back-up, scarlet-sore botty re-clothed once again!
"And now get to your room, young lady and think about your behaviour, already!!" This powerful drawing makes me remember it like yesterday! Boo-Hoo :-(
Lovely photo above too, B. Tartan skirt, botty smacked, white panties, facing the wall and more hands on head! Just par for the course, B.

Au contraire, B. The red is awesome.
ReplyDeleteAnd it enhances Paula's Spartan context on drawing one (& the others obvs!) You add some lovely, cheeky, wry humour (Boo-Hoo!!), some schadenfreude & a grave acceptance on drawing one, that bare bottom discipline was normal & necessary for naughty daughters in traditional homes, in the UK & France in he 1970s. Don't spare the bare!
I always like to say B, that in the 1960s, for me the world was in black n white, but our botties gotten very red! This is also a teasing metaphor for the transition from monochrome photography to colour film (family portraits in living rooms!) Albeit colour film was perhaps over-exposed in the Atlanta sun, pun intended :-)
Oh my! I always thought Paula Meadows captured these strict, Ol' fashioned , realties all so swell. And I do so love your deep blue colour additions, like on Thursday's post, just gone. With the darling, princess brat, naughty Lil' Miss Cobalt Botty Blue :-)
