Your glorious novellas & vignettes are always founded in sound fact, B! Growing up in the Christian South in the 1960s, I was a obviously a keen observer of discipline for my girlfriends at church & in the 'hood.
The concept of Aunt Roberta (& loco parentis) was common in various forms. And in Europe/UK Janus would also highlight the social trend, relating to bare bottom punishments for daughters, nieces and the girl next door, by designated "others". Oh my!
My sister & I were not spanked by our babysitters. Mom did not allow it. Again, this is unusual for my suburb, because my princess besties gotten smacked by babysitters. Our mother would tell our sitter, that she would pull down our pyjamas & cane our bare botties if we misbehaved, when she gotten home. She showed the sitter the dreaded cane GULP! GULP! But the sitter was not allowed to cane us. And naturally, we tried to behave. Doh!!!
I have seen many of my girlfriends have their bottoms bared & chastised with hand, hairbrush, strap & cane when I was young in the 60s & 70s. And indeed, my cohort of good friends' young daughters skelped more recently since the 1980s of course, B. Like Aunt Roberta, there was often an ever-present bunch, indeed a plethora, of "Aunt Joans" & "Uncle Tonys" who would lend a hard hand or cut a fresh, green switch! Some were real aunts, while others were family friends called "aunty" or "uncle". Babysitters spanked, and maids/helpers also smacked bare princess bottoms when needed (my Asian work colleagues in Hong Kong, Singapore originally, & China more recently, more recently also talked about this trend for "spanking maids" over the years) .
In my community of gorgeous African American women, including church, (very significant in Atlanta, of course), I recall over decades, how strict, loving, redoubtable moms & maids alike, were only too quick to pull down a lil' pair of 1950s cotton, white panties and raise a pretty 1950s yellow dress to smack a bare, tender botty to a riper shade of tomato! Those moms were kind but fierce. And it was all just normal & necessary, B. We girls needed bare ass whuppin's!! And there sure was never any hesitation or compromise to administer them when in the park, the mall, or at home, thank the Lord.
The lovely Anglo-French actress, Kristen Scott Thomas (age 63 soon) long since living in France, said in an article a decade ago, how she and her sister spent their wonderful childhood holidays in France in the 1960s. If they misbehaved, their mother simply sent them to walk a nearby family friend who would spank their bare bottoms over his knee, and return them to their mother, attitudes adjusted & well-behaved, already!
It is such a cute anecdote, but one that was ever so frequent, and often not even discussed, B. KST is 18 months younger than me. Oh my! And so naturally, such stinging, bare bottom discipline was unquestionably just par for the course for y'all most frequently. We deserved it. And we gotten it, B!
So, yup! Aunt Roberta is alive and well, B!!! And if moms don't cane their naughty girls' bare backsides at home when needed, then Aunt Roberta sure will!! Hugs n kind smackies Strict No-nonsense Brenda xx
