Daughters going bare bottomed over mom's knee for the switch was a rite of passage in the American South, B. I witnessed my girlfriends receive this routine punishment a bunch in the 60s & 70s. Oh my! It was all just par for the course, & the switch featured in American literature commonly over the decades. B. For me, discovering Janus, 1970s, the switch was also a source of intrigue in the European context...
"My mother always used straight branches of a willow tree (from our garden) It is very flexible and I can assure you that it hurts."
So begins a wonderful, frank letter from a Dutch lady (Janus 1970s) describing punishment at home for herself & her sister, from their mom. The brief, no-nonsense letter illustrates the normality & necessity of bare bottom punishment in good homes in yore, B.
She continues "At home we had to wear blouse, skirt (above knees), white ankle socks and black shoes (highly polished) Underwear - a panty only."

For normal discipline she then focuses & says "on the table was always a short branch of the willow. She used it for hand spankings."
She then describes a more serious smacked botty discipline process, with the willow switch from mom, knickers duly removed of course... delightful indeed, B

Well, yes, that is the idea, as my own mom always said, "it is punishment, Brenda"; but it is completely harmless & an effective chastisement for naughty daughters. And it sure stings soooo! And the willow is so appropriately spontaneous too, in this context.
