Reminds me of my gorgeous, cute lil' sister telling lies to mom in the 1960s, and suffering these exact consequences. It was harsh but harmless, B. Safe but salutary. And strictly unquestioned, for sure.
Her pretty, conservative 1950s gingham dress and sensible, 1950s church-compliant, cotton panties travelling in opposite directions for appropriate chastisement on bare buttocks with the rattan "rod of cotrection in front of God." It was just a fact of life.
Soooo love the last photo: cane to bare botty. Yup! A typical, enduring image of my sister from countless whoopings. I still tease her today, B, like I gotten to do in yore :-)

As wise Janus editors stated, mid 1970s, naughty daughters need a "sensible knickers down caning" in good, traditional homes.
Church moms in my locality (in Georgia) had a wrong trope, pray, misguided mythical impression, that the cane was given to grand ceremony. Long salutary procedures For special punishment. For long scolding & major gestures ?! Pray, well no ma'am. Not alt all!
As mother raised me, B: A hand to bare legs in public. A cane to my bare botty at home. Period.
Oh my! Keep the cane at the front of the cupboard, mom: quickly accessible. Spontaneous punishment at the double, B. In the living room, dresses are rapidly raised. Panties are pulled down in a fast, timely fashion. Bend over the sofa! Twelve strokes on the bare buttocks. Oh my! IT STINGS!
Panties are pulled back up, Dresses smartened back down.
It's all over very quickly, B. Whatever two naughty lil' daughters did to misbehave or tell lies in the store, in the mall, in the park, in the home ? Well, now they are as good as gold, B. Two perfect lil' angels!! Calm. Cartharsis. A simple chore is well-achieved. Salutary. Harmless. Fiercely stinging bottoms! Job done mom!!
